My Everest. That's how I think of my trek down and (thankfully also) up the Bright Angel Trail at the Grand Canyon.
No one can ever prepare you for what it feels like to peer into this great expanse of nature. Photos do it no justice. It looks like a painting even when you're there, yet you know it's real. You can hike into it. And once you do—no matter how far down and in you go—it is totally different below the rim.
Hiking down, turning around, and seeing the cliff face I would need to traverse up again to join the world as I knew it, I knew when I finished that I would consider that my hiking crown jewel for the rest of my life. It was just as meaningful as I imagine climbing Mount Everest would feel to someone who had done it. But for me, this was achievable and I had conquered the greatest of canyons.
It was truly my Mount Everest, and something I would feel proud about and remember for the rest of my life.
