On the last day of a week-long trip to Madrid, Spain, we were just ending a day trip to Segovia. During the drive back to Madrid, we stopped at a small castle that seemed like many others we had seen throughout Spain. However, it was the final room of this castle that truly blew us away with its historical significance.
My friend had started to wander off from us and our guide, and did not pay attention to her description of the room we were in. I gave her my undivided attention but still managed to take photos to document the experience. It was a throne room, with majestic thrones and curtains on the windows, and grandiose views through those windows opposite the two thrones.
As we boarded the van to return to Madrid, I turned to my friend—who was an United States history teacher—and said, "Wow...that was one of the coolest parts of our entire week here in Spain!" He asked why. I felt bad for him that he missed what she said and that he missed the experience I just had (not being a history teacher but understanding the significance of what I had seen). I explained to him, "The throne room we were just in was the room where Christopher Columbus asked King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella for money for his journey to discover the New World!"
