How to Leave Your Heart (and Rented Bike) in San Francisco

You may think that bike riding in a super-hilly city like San Francisco isn't the smartest or easiest thing to do. But it offers so many advantages over walking, driving, taking the bus, and even the famous cable cars.

The conveniences of a bike ride include the faster rate of travel around the city and surrounding area, the ability to lock up the bike and walk around, being outside rather than in a car or bus, the exercise, and the sheer fun.

A number of companies offer bike rentals in San Francisco, and you'd be hard pressed to walk more than a few blocks without stumbling upon one of their outlets. They include a helmet, maps of the area, recommended routes that usually go across the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge, a lock, a bag, and a friendly smile and attitude.

Most people start out near Fisherman's Wharf, travel along the Bay through the Presidio, cross the Golden Gate Bridge, pedal on down to Sausalito, and take the Ferry back to their starting point. Sausalito offers many cute art galleries and outdoor cafes to grab a bite to eat. If you're truly brave, once over the Golden Gate Bridge, head around the bend and up the hills for fantastic and awe-inspiring views of the bridge, San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz, and downtown San Francisco.

And believe it or not, it's possible to navigate the city on a bike and stick to fairly flat streets, even from Union Square to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf.
