When I finally decided the time was right to go on safari, I followed the advice of more experienced safari travelers and decided on Botswana. Their direction was unanimous and clear, but why, I asked?
I knew what I wanted on my first safari, and what I didn't want. I didn't want to see lots of people, jeeps, telephone poles, or wires. I didn't want to confined to the "roads" on the safari and wanted to be able to go off-road to get into the bushes and trees to see the wildlife up close. For that, Botswana was first on everyone's list of where I should go.
There is nothing that compares to being on safari in person. Television programs are a wonderful way to spread at least part of the actual experience to those who have not or could not have gotten to Africa themselves. But when you're there, it is worlds better and more memorable that you can imagine. The first time a lion walked past the jeep, possibly 3 feet from me, is something I will never forget. All of us in the jeep whispered "Oh, wow!" as it happened. It was not a scary experience. I never felt unsafe. And while the wildlife is the star of the show, it is also the smells of the sage bushes, the sunsets, the stars of the Milky Way and the amount of the stars you can see at night, the sounds during the night, and everything else that will stay with you forever.
