We Want the Local Beer!

My friends and I had just hiked the ruins of a German castle on the Rhine River, and we couldn't wait to grab a nice beer. Settling in to a cafe at the foothills of the castle, we politely asked for beer and asked what they had.

The pleasant waitress rattled off a list of American beers. We were dumbfounded. Did we look like uncultured tourists? Did we look scared to try something local? Was that truly all they had to serve us?

"No," we pleaded. "What do you make right here? Something local...maybe even made right here in this town? Or in this building?" Alright...we might not have said it exactly like that, but that's what we meant. The waitress then offered us very local beers that we were eager to order.

It was a funny occurrence to be in the heart of the Rhine valley in Germany and be offered American beers. The next funny occurrence happened when we ordered the "medium" sized beers which came in mugs so huge they could have doubled as water towers of beer.
