I'm not a cat person. I like dogs. I got to see both while on safari. The wild dogs always gave us a great show with their hunts. But the cats are the majestic kings and queens of the land. On our last day in Botswana, these two lovely ladies couldn't have given us more opportunity to observe them in all their glory.
When we first came upon them, one of them was laying in the grass and the other was staring at a kudu off in the distance. We first hoped that she would give us the opportunity to witness a hunt, and give us a viewing of the action up close. However, that didn't happen. There was much lounging and rolling in the grass and not much movement. Then, the two females got up and started walking away. We were happy for the time we got to spend with them, and then we prepared to be on our way to see more wildlife.
But they they started getting up on a log, and we turned the jeep engine off once again. I'm not sure if they didn't even give us a second thought, or if they consciously decided to pose for us. And pose they did...for two hours. And for those two hours we stayed there with them. They posed facing one way, then posed facing the other. They got up on all fours, then perched on the log on their bellies (which we certainly hoped were full).
"Don't cut off their tails," our safari guide instructed. "You want to make sure their whole body is in the photo," he continued. That advice seemed reasonable and obvious, but when looking back at the photos it is actually so much nicer to see them "whole" and as they were.
After those two hours were up, they got off the log and wondered off into the distance. We thanked them in the best way we knew how...by silently nodding in the jeep and then sharing the story with our friends and families back home, so that they might also one day get to greet our female friends in person.
