Leanings and Learnings in Pisa

There are some places in the world that can make a person seem uneducated, or naive, or just plain unknowledgeable. One example is seeing how small the Mona Lisa is, or seeing the huge paintings on the wall opposite her. Another is seeing the Ripley’s Believe it or Not across the street from the smaller-than-expected Alamo. And this example describes the expected surroundings of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, in Pisa, Italy.

Sure, we’ve all see photos of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but they’re usually cropped in pretty tightly on the tower itself. We are astonished at how it leans (it actually leans much less since they’ve tried to straighten it out), we look forward to taking the obligatory photo of us “holding up” the tower, and hope we can get to climb to the top. We may see people in the photo, to give it a sense of scale.

But one thing that many of us are unprepared for when we see it in person, and one thing that many of us have never seen in photos, is the gigantic Pisa Cathedral that sits right next to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is truly massive, and is seems even more gigantic because of us having no idea it existed next to such a famous landmark.

So the lesson here is that, while we may get to see many famous landmarks from around the world in photographs, nothing can take the place of traveling and seeing these places in person for ourselves. And it’s not just seeing the one single landmark in person, but it’s about taking in the entire view, the entire location, and the entire setting where these amazingly famous locations are. We may be amazed at what else there is to see!
