Owl Things Considered, Another Great Sighting

On my first safari trip, one of the camps was considered a water camp. I didn’t understand at the time that meant it was known for birdwatching more than lion watching (although this was the same camp with the leopard on the walkway one morning, as described in another blog post).

One day during lunch, one of the safari guides asked if we’d like to see a big owl that was perched in a tree above the kitchen tent. Why would anyone say “no” to that?

So we wandered over to the kitchen tent area and looked up to see an enormous Pel’s Fishing Owl, something I quickly learned was very rare to see.

In fact, at the next camp during our trip, I became somewhat of a celebrity for having seen one. At dinner one night during the famous Boma Night, a group of serious photographers (“serious” because their camera lenses were about three feet long) thought I was the coolest and luckiest person on the continent because they had been searching for a Pel’s Fishing Owl for the past 20 years, and all I had to do was follow someone away from the lunch table at my previous camp.
