The House That (Viennese) Opera Built

I’ve played the piano since I was five, and the violin since I was eight. So visiting Vienna during a trip to Central and Eastern Europe was a high point for me.

We visited Mozart’s house, attended a performance by a chamber orchestra one night, and dined in famous cafes with even more historically famous patrons. And even though we weren’t able to obtain tickets to the opera, we took a tour of Vienna Opera House.

The hallways and rooms looked more like they belonged in an enormous palace. The intricacies and detail around every turn of the dozen-or-so rooms we visited was unbelievable.

The final room on the tour was the main opera auditorium. I was so happy that we got to see it and enter it (and even linger for a long while) despite them preparing for the evening’s performance—which was opening night for the season. That was truly the icing on the cake for the hour-long tour.
