As we approach this July 4th—Independence Day in the United States—I'm reminded of a trip that included the actual location where the Declaration of Independence was signed. A trip to Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, allows one to experience not a replica of the room, but the real-life room where the American Founding Fathers convened, discussed, and signed that immensely historical document.
When we read about it in history books, or learn about it in school classrooms, it seems like it was such a long time ago. But when you think about it, it is still fairly recent history compared to the histories of so many other places around the world. And standing in the actual room and seeing the furniture and objects on the desks gives you a real feeling of being part of history and what those early Americans were thinking and looking ahead to.
They were committing treason. They were abandoning authority. They were risking their lives. And it is amazing to think about how so many of the freedoms and rights that so many people have can be traced back to that very day, and to the very events that happened in that room.
