Did you ever wonder what the OUTSIDE of famous places look like? Sure, we all know what the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican looks like. But how many of us know what the outside of that incredibly famous building looks like?
If you happen to climb the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, you'll get the chance to see what the Sistine Chapel (along with the rest of Vatican City) looks like from above. It's actually a fairly ordinary-looking building from the outside. It's slightly angled from the other surrounding buildings, which sets it apart and makes it easy to pick out.
Seeing it this way reminds us that it's the paintings within the Sistine Chapel that make it famous, and the incredible artistry of Michelangelo we are lucky to see (if we are lucky to visit it in person), and not the physical walls that the building itself is constructed from. From the outside, it's merely a building made of stone like so many others. But on the inside, it's truly a magnificent one-of-a-kind wonder of the world.
