A Cyclone at the Beach

A summer in New York City isn't a full summer unless you head to the beach. That beach can be one down the Jersey Shore, on Long Island, out in the Hamptons, or right in New York City itself at Coney Island.

The world-famous Coney Island Boardwalk is still alive and well, as is Luna Park––the amusement park for all ages along the beach. And its most famous ride is, of course, the Coney Island Cyclone.

I have to admit, I had never ridden on the Cyclone until I was in my twenties. Not because I was afraid...in fact, I have loved scary roller coasters my entire life and often ride them again and again at amusement parks. I just had never gotten the chance to spend enough time in Coney Island whenever I was there.

But we had some time to spare before an outdoor concert in the minor league baseball stadium there, so my friend and I finally rode the famous coaster. It is a remarkably long ride, considering the relatively small structure (the photo here shows the entire ride). It was bumpy (isn't that part of the experience and thrill?) and surprisingly scary, even though it isn't that tall of a structure.

And when it was all over, we rode it again for a dollar. You can't beat that! (That policy has since ended, but it’s still worth it to ride it again!)
