In New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park, there is an opportunity to spend a night on a special ship called the Fiordland Navigator. in Doubtful Sound. Along with a buffet dinner and a bar, there are opportunities to kayak, swim, or take a smaller boat around the fiords to get an even closer connection to the wonderful sights that this unique place has to offer.
At one point of the journey, the ship’s crew partakes in what it likes to call the “Sounds of Silence.” The ship’s engines and power are turned off, and people are asked to remain where they are (hopefully they are on the outer decks) for about 10 minutes, and this stillness and silence allows you to take in all of the sights as well as the sounds of what being in the true wilderness is all about. There are no people—aside from the 75 or so people on the vessel—within about 75 kilometers of the ship. The bird calls seem nonstop, and the flowing waterfalls can be heard from all around.
It is a wonderful experience, and one that can be participated in after a relatively short drive from Queenstown. Of course, you’ll need to take a ferry and a bus just to get to the ship’s dock within Fiordland National Park, but it is definitely well worth it.
