A Local (and Global) Lesson from a Maori Village Elder

Sometimes when you travel, you realize how similar we all are. And most times, you also realize that we have a lot to learn from other cultures.

On a trip to New Zealand, our group was invited to spend an evening at a traditional Maori (native people) village. After a ceremony to invite our group inside, we were treated to traditional customs, lessons, stories, dances, and more from the tribe. Even more interestingly, we had the honor or speaking with a village elder, and could ask him any questions we had.

I did not choose to ask about any customs I was unfamiliar with, or anything that might seem offensive to the elder. I instead asked him what lesson from his tribe and from the Maori people he would like us to take back home with us. He replied that it is not enough to just want what is best for ourselves, but instead we must do what is best for people around us. And those people around us would include our families, our neighbors, those in our country, and those from other countries. I found that incredibly profound and relevant now perhaps more than ever before.
