Singing Praises (and Opera) for Sydney’s Sights

I never thought I’d see it in person. I’d seen it hundreds of times in photographs. I’d seen it dozens of times on television on New Year’s Eve. But I never thought I’d travel to truly the other side of the planet from home—almost as far from home as I could ever go—and get to see both the outside and inside of the famous Sydney Opera House.

On a trip to Australia, it was literally the first thing we did. We walked straight to the harbor and to the Opera House. As you approach, it doesn’t look right. In photos, such as the one here, we always see the Sydney Opera House from the side. But head on, which is how you see it when walking from the heart of the city, it is actually three separate structures, each one looking like a pointed egg sticking up from the ground. I had always thought it was one building, but that was not the case.

Our schedule of the tour of the inside of the Opera House seemed to have been timed perfectly. They weren’t using the main performance hall for anything, so we were allowed to spend some time in there and take photos (a rare opportunity). The inside of the buildings is almost as impressive as the outside, although the outside is so iconic.

I’m still amazed I stood there in person and saw this famous place. For me, it was almost like being on another planet, which was almost the case since it was so far away from home it often felt that way.
