Touring the World at a Cathedral of Learning

Sometimes, we find travel treasures in the least likely of places. While this photo looks like it was taken in some grand palace or government building, learning its true location will give you a good ol’ schooling (pun intended).

This is one of dozens of Nationality Room classrooms in the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning, a Gothic tower located on campus in the middle of the city. Classes are actually taught in these rooms, which represent different countries from around the world and were designed by individuals from those very countries. They are at once a museum, history lesson, travel experience, and cultural icon in a single location.

If you were student taking a class in one of these classrooms, it could be difficult to concentrate on the lesson being taught and easier to be mesmerized by your surroundings. But if you’re a visitor, the University offers an audio guide tour of most of the dozens of rooms for an extremely nominal fee.
