A Huge Surprise at the Tiny Mona Lisa

It’s quite possibly one of the most famous “things” in all of the world. It’s not just definitively THE most famous painting in the world, but it’s easy to argue that there may not be many people on Earth who do not know the Mona Lisa.

But how many of those people have actually seen it in person? Even though millions and millions of people have (at least 6 million visit it every year), there are just as many who have never stood right in front of it. For those who have been to the home of the Mona Lisa—the Louvre Museum in Paris—one aspect of seeing the painting is nearly universal...the surprise of how relatively small it is!

The Mona Lisa is only 30 inches by 21 inches (or 77 cm by 53 cm). That’s so much smaller than most people expect it to be. It is located alone, in a climate-controlled enclosure behind bulletproof glass, on a giant wall within a giant room in the museum. Directly opposite the Mona Lisa are two giant paintings which most people don’t even look at, except if perhaps they leave the room in that direction.

However people leave the room, and however long they stop and stare at the mysterious Mona Lisa, hopefully they all spend lots more time in the Louvre, which was originally a palace and is now the most visited art museum in the world. The Louvre contains so many world-famous pieces of art and culture, including the Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the Code of Hammurabi, and the Napoleon Apartments.
