The TranzAlpine Railway across the South Island of New Zealand is considered one of the top train journeys in the world due to the spectacular scenery it passes through on its 5-hour trip. The train travels from Christchurch through the Southern Alps mountain range to Greymouth, but you can take a partial trip since there are many stops along the way.
Perhaps the best way to experience the incredible scenery is by standing in the open-air viewing car, with giant openings on both sides of the car where windows would be (there are still walls and railings to hold on to on the lower half of both sides). These open sides allow for unobstructed photography, or simply awe-inspiring gazing at the near-unbelievable landscapes that pass by every second of the journey (once you get a short distance outside of the city of Christchurch).
Even though the wind and high altitude temperatures might make it a bit chilly, it is easy to spend the entire trip in that open-air viewing car as to not miss a single view. It can be quite an exercise to keep moving from side to side in the car to see and capture the sights on both sides, but it’s absolutely well worth it. Those that want to stay inside need not worry, as the large windows allow you to see the landscapes from the warmer comfort of the regular train cars.
