Here...Kitty, Kitty!

When you’re on safari, most of the animals (even the lions) don’t really care much that you are there. They go about their business, sometimes not even looking up at you in the vehicle. In fact, they see the vehicle as one big “thing,” something that they see most days, something that never harms them, and something that they have not tried to eat. They don’t see the vehicle as something with “people” inside. It’s only if someone stands up (which you shouldn’t do) that they might notice there are individual “things” inside the large shape.

Sometimes, the animals may come close to the vehicle because it provides them shade. It’s not uncommon for a lion to even walk up to the vehicle and lay down for quite some time, relaxing in the (relatively) cool shade created by the vehicle.

Many people wonder what it’s like to go on a safari and see a lion or other large animal up close. Often, it’s only a bit scary the very first time one comes close to you (or rather, you come close to it — it’s their home, after all). After that first time, it’s just a mesmerizing experience.

In this photo, you can see how close the lions come to the vehicle. Sometimes, it’s even closer. But notice how the lion doesn’t give the vehicle or its inhabitants any care of mind. It’s actually focused on two lionesses with cubs who are close to the vehicle the photographer was in. It’s not happy that there are cubs in its territory that are not its own offspring. The lionesses know this, and kept the lion at bay for a good 30 minutes before it walked off. But not before the three adult lions and 5 cubs gave the onlookers quite a show and the opportunity for many amazing photos.
