Stopping for One of the World’s First Traffic Lights

Sometimes, we see things so often in our everyday lives that we don’t even stop to think about them. Take a traffic light. It’s something we may come across every few seconds of our lives (when we’re not at home, at least) depending on where we live. Have you ever stopped to wonder where the first traffic light was?

If you had to guess, where would you guess? Would you even guess the correct continent, figuring it was most likely in Europe? Or could it have been in the United States?

In fact, the world’s very first traffic light stood in Cleveland, Ohio, but the first one in Europe was in Berlin, Germany. In that spot in Berlin is a replica (pictured in the photo), but it’s on the same spot where the original once stood. It’s at a busy intersection in the city called Potsdamer Plotz, where many major roads come together in the plaza.

It’s something so commonplace today, but I stood there in front of it for quite a while. I took pictures from all angles, many with me in it to document my being in the presence of something so historical, something so world-changing, and something that impacts almost every single person on the planet.
