Wild with Excitement Over Africa’s Wild Dogs

People who haven’t yet been on a safari may be under the impression that wild dog sightings are the “consolation prize” if you don’t see lions every day on game drives. However, that couldn’t be further from reality.

Wild dogs are endangered and low in numbers, and with few exceptions they are relatively rare to see on a safari in Africa. Most safari goers would love to see wild dogs—sometimes called painted dogs due to their spotted, multicolored, “splattered-like” appearance.

In Botswana’s Okavango Delta, they are more commonly seen, and on a recent safari I had the great sighting of following them on the hunt—see another blog post for that story.

They don’t always look quite this creepy, and are typically quite beautiful, but even though they are successful on the hunt about 80% of the time, they are often skinny creatures. And they make the funniest squealing noises that are exactly the opposite of what you would expect such animals to sound like.
