Sometimes, you stumble upon famous places without notice. During a trip in California, I took a lunchtime walk to explore the area. The neighborhood was a mix of residential houses, large office buildings, and hotels, but it was a hidden park and driveway that caught my eye.
The Westwood Village Memorial Park in Los Angeles, California, looks like a regular driveway from the main road, and looks like a peaceful park as you drive in. However, it's the final resting place for some of Hollywood's most famous stars. And it's completely open to the public and free.
Just some of the Hollywood royalty who are buried here including Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, Don Knotts, Eva Gabor, Mel Torme, Heather O'Rourke, Roy Orbison, Jim Backus, Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Carroll O'Connor, Rodney Dangerfield, Peter Falk, Farrah Fawcett, Kirk Douglas, Florence Henderson, and Hugh Hefner.
Hugh Hefner had reserved the outdoor mausoleum spot next to Marilyn Monroe. And the man above Marilyn Monroe requested to be placed in his casket upside-down so he could look at Marilyn for eternity. And, as can be seen in the photo, the stone covering Marilyn Monroe's spot (and, to a lesser extent, Hugh's spot) is pink versus the other stones, due to people kissing and touching the stone so much. You can even make out some lipstick marks from people's kisses. Creepy, interesting, historical, and entertaining...all in one place!
